Frazadas, known as blankets in the High Andes of Peru, have multiple historical meanings behind them. They can be used in a number of ways in any space, from rugs, blankets and throws to table decorations or even wall hangings - just let your imagination run wild!

Made entirely by hand from sheep or llama wool, these fascinating items are coloured using only natural dyes that come from animal or vegetable properties that are native to the region. Cochineal, for example, from which the natural dye carmine is derived, produces a spectrum of colours from intense red to pastel pinks. Many other natural products are used to produce a multitude of gorgeous colours from Peru’s native purple corn and muña plant to Pacific Sea Salt.

We work directly with the artisans from the Sacred Valley of the Incas to the High Altitudes of Puno and Lake Titicaca at some 3800m. It takes the artisans up to one month or more to produce a frazada that carries with it a history of indigenous symbolism. They continue to use the same techniques derived from their Incan ancestors. These frazadas tell the history of an immense civilization. Traditionally used to shelter from the cold of the great heights of Tahuantinsuyo, the Incan Empire, they have been passed down through generations and changing customs and each piece tells a story. If a blanket is smaller in size with strong colors, for example, it is possible it was woven as a gift for a newborn baby and its mother.

However, the custom of making these iconic frazadas is, unfortunately, being lost due to the time and energy required to produce these wonderful pieces of art and the work of the artisan being undervalued in modern society. Therefore, we as a business, and I as a Peruvian citizen, work by the principles of fair trade. We travel frequently to the depths of Peru to ensure we work directly with the artisans and ensure the best price for them to try to keep alive this tradition so it can live on for generations to come. It is for the preservation of this precious culture of my country that we can assure you that by choosing a frazada from Inka Fabric you will not only be adding a touch of pure charm to the space you choose but purchasing a unique, vintage piece of Peruvian history that represents the best of its kind.
