How Your Pyjamas Affect Your Sleep: Pima Cotton vs. Acrylic Fabrics

We spend approximately a third of our lives sleeping, yet we often pay more attention to the mattress than to the fabric in direct contact with our skin during those eight hours. The choice of your loungewear has a direct and scientifically proven impact on the quality of your sleep cycle.

In a market saturated with fast fashion, it is vital to understand the profound differences between high-end natural fibres and synthetic alternatives.

The Heat Trap of Synthetic Fibres

The vast majority of mass-produced sleepwear today uses synthetic fibres such as acrylic or polyester blends. Although they might feel soft to the initial touch in the shop, these petroleum-derived fabrics present a fundamental problem during the night: they are essentially plastic.

Acrylic does not breathe. During the phases of sleep, our body temperature fluctuates naturally. Synthetic fabrics trap body heat and moisture, creating a damp microclimate that confuses the body's thermoregulation system. This results in sleep interruptions, night sweats, and frequent waking. Furthermore, with every wash, these garments release microplastics into the water and lose their original shape.

Natural Thermoregulation: The Peruvian Pima Cotton Standard

Unlike synthetic materials, Peruvian Pima cotton is an active natural fibre. Globally renowned for being an extra-long staple (ELS) fibre, Pima has a cellular structure that allows it to absorb and release moisture with exceptional efficiency.

At Inka Fabric, we structure our garments using an Interlock 50/1 knit. This technical level of tailoring creates a double-faced fabric that offers unparalleled softness and an elegant drape. During the winter, the Interlock fabric acts as a lightweight insulator, and on warmer nights, its high breathability allows air to circulate, maintaining a constant body temperature optimal for deep rest.

Hypoallergenic and Designed for Sensitive Skin

Constant friction during the night can irritate the skin. Acrylic fibres and low-quality cottons tend to pill (form small, rough bobbles) after a few washes due to the breakage of their short fibres.

Peruvian Pima cotton, thanks to the extreme length and strength of its fibre, does not pill. It maintains a smooth and silky surface over the years. Moreover, being hand-cultivated and harvested, it dispenses with the harsh chemical processes used in synthetic textiles, making it a naturally hypoallergenic material, ideal for sensitive skin or dermatological conditions.

'Quiet Luxury' in Your Night-time Routine

Rest is also a visual and mental experience. True luxury is quiet; it does not require loud logos, but rather manifests in the perfect weight of the fabric, the impeccable seams, and an aesthetic that invites calm.

Our organic colour palette—olive green, terracotta, and sand tones—is intentionally designed to reduce visual stimulation before sleeping. This connection with nature, combined with the purity of the material, transforms the simple act of putting on pyjamas into a ritual of disconnection.

Technical Comparison for Your Rest

To understand clearly the difference in your investment, here we detail how the different textiles behave:

Feature Pima Cotton Pyjamas (Interlock) Acrylic / Synthetic Pyjamas Standard Cotton
Breathability Excellent (Thermoregulating) Very low (Traps sweat and heat) Medium
Softness Extreme (Extra-long staple fibre) High initially, rough over time Moderate (High friction)
Durability Very high (Pill-free) Medium (Loses shape and retains odours) Low (Rapid wear)
Impact on skin Hypoallergenic and silky Prone to causing irritation Acceptable
